Understanding the Three Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha
By Dr. Anika Sharma • July 15, 2024
In Ayurveda, the universe is composed of five elements: Space (Akasha), Air (Vayu), Fire (Agni), Water (Jala), and Earth (Prithvi). These elements combine to form three fundamental energies, or doshas, known as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Vata: The Energy of Movement
Composed of Space and Air, Vata governs all movement in the body, including breathing, circulation, and nerve impulses. When in balance, Vata individuals are creative, energetic, and adaptable. Out of balance, they can experience anxiety, insomnia, and dry skin.
Pitta: The Energy of Transformation
Composed of Fire and Water, Pitta oversees digestion, metabolism, and body temperature. Balanced Pitta types are intelligent, focused, and natural leaders. An excess of Pitta can lead to irritability, inflammation, and digestive issues like acid reflux.
Kapha: The Energy of Structure
Composed of Water and Earth, Kapha provides structure, stability, and lubrication to the body. In balance, Kapha individuals are calm, loving, and strong. When imbalanced, they may experience lethargy, weight gain, and congestion.
Understanding your unique constitution of these three doshas is the first step toward achieving holistic health and balance in your life.
